Narrating my first solo project

I had a lot of joy narrating my first solo project, The Forbidden Visions of Lucius Galloway. I’m used to dual narration, but getting to narrate a project entirely on my own came with its own set of challenges and plenty of lessons along the way.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was to choose my character voices wisely. For characters I’ll be narrating for longer stretches of the book, I need to make sure I choose a voice that I can comfortably sustain. More dramatic voices—or voices that may be more vocally straining—are better suited for characters with fewer lines or for shorter, emotionally driven sequences.

Another lesson, and one I continue to discover throughout my narration journey, is to stay connected, find the discovery, and really let loose. That’s something I’ve noticed not only in narration, but in acting as a whole. The more I allow myself to be vulnerable to the text, the more connected the experience becomes—and hopefully, that connection translates to the listeners.
